About the Family

The WEIL family is presumed to have received visas from Aristides de Sousa Mendes in June of 1940.

They crossed into Portugal, and sailed on the vessel Quanza from Lisbon to Vera Cruz, Mexico, by way of New York. The ship was denied landing in Mexico and sent back to Europe with the WEIL family and others on board. Eventually the passengers were rescued by Eleanor Roosevelt and allowed to disembark in the United States.
