About the Family

The MARSMAN couple received visas from Aristides de Sousa Mendes in Bordeaux on June 18, 1940.

Hendrik MARSMAN, a Dutch poet, and his wife Rina boarded the vessel Berenice in Bordeaux on June 20, bound for the United Kingdom. The following day, the boat was torpedoed in the English Channel, and nearly all of the passengers drowned. Rina MARSMAN survived the incident and the war.
