About the Family

The numbered visas were issued by Aristides de Sousa Mendes in Bordeaux on May 29, 1940, after having been explicitly denied by Salazar, the Portuguese head of state. Henri UNTERMANS was a Romanian diplomat who had met Sousa Mendes when both were stationed in Antwerp, Belgium.

They crossed into Portugal and emigrated to Brazil and the United States.
