About the Family

The BRANDEL and MORESCO families, Dutch citizens living in Brussels, arrived in Porto on June 29, 1940, presumably after having received visas from Aristides de Sousa Mendes.

Isidore MORESCO, father of Rebecca BRANDEL, died in Portugal. His wife Marguerite MORESCO and their son Léon MORESCO sailed on the vessel Nea Hellas from Lisbon to New York in October 1940.

The BRANDEL family were advised to go to a Dutch colony and ended up in Indonesia in 1941. Shortly after that the Japanese invaded Indonesia and put everyone in camps. After the war Rachel and Elias BRANDEL and their daughter Joséphine returned to the Netherlands and from there went to Brussels.
