The BLITZ couple received visas issued by Aristides de Sousa Mendes in Bordeaux on June 14, 1940 after having been explicitly denied by Salazar, the Portuguese head of state.

They crossed into Portugal and sailed from Lisbon to New York on the vessel Quanza in August 1940.
