About the Family

This family received visas from Aristides de Sousa Mendes in Bayonne in June of 1940. Eleonore SCHAPIRO had a dog with her, an airdale terrier named Peter. They also picked up two Portuguese men along the journey, and traveled with them to Portugal.

In Portugal, the family resided in Figueira da Foz. Simon BEGAGON-ARONSON obtained US visas for the family in Porto. They then flew from Lisbon to New York on the Atlantic Clipper seaplane in September of 1940. Peter the dog was not allowed on the plane and traveled to New York by ship.

Eleonore's father and stepmother Jacob and Ida SCHAPIRO were also Sousa Mendes visa recipients.
